Sofia Coppola's 2006 retelling of the tale of Marie Antoinette is one of the most visually stimulating movies I have ever seen. The story itself is about Marie Antoinette (played by Kirsten Dunst), who is France's iconic ill-fated glamourous queen. The film follows her journey from her marriage to Louis XVI at age 15, reign as queen at 19 and her ultimate death during the downfall of Versailles.
While the overall historical facts and feel of the movie might be a little off, (Coppola made it a point to use modern music & other aspects of contemporary pop culture in the film for contrast which I loved, but many people didn't.) the film itself is absolutely stunning. It captures the essence of Marie Antoinette's over-the-top femininity and naivety. The styling is perfect, with an abundance of florals, golds and brocades. Decadent pastries, luxurious shoes, impeccable interior design is completely apparent throughout the entire movie.
Here are some ways that the Marie Antoinette look has been emulated by designers throughout various seasons:
Christian Louboutin
John Galliano
Herve Leger
For my style depiction, I decided to take a modern twist on Marie Antoinette. It's my version of what I think she would wear right now, inspired by the overall feel of Coppola's oh-so-pretty film portrayal of her.
